What is a science GPA and how is it different from my overall GPA?

Your science / BCPM GPA includes your grades for all biology, chemistry, physics and math courses taken as an undergraduate. This is different from your overall GPA which includes your grades for all non science courses including general education courses.

You can use the following BCPM GPA Calculator to calculate your science GPA.

What are weeder classes?

A weeder class is a college course that is characterized as having a large dropout rate due to rigorous expectations, such as difficult tests and high studying demand. These classes "weed" out those who lack the motivation or support to keep up with the work. Chemistry, Physics, Life Sciences and Math are typical weeder classes at UCLA.

To avoid this from happening to you, make sure to use the resources found at the end of this page and on the Resource Centers tab.

How many classes should I take every quarter?

Most UCLA students take 3-4 classes per quarter. This is usually a balance between general education (GE) courses and major prerequisites during their first and second year at UCLA. As a STEM major, prerequisite courses are likely to include Chemistry, Physics, Math and Biology, therefore students aim to only take 1-2 major prerequisite courses per quarter.

How do I know if this class counts towards my major?

After declaring a major, you can run a Degree Audit Report (DARS) which will provide a list of the courses that your major requires. It will also provide courses that can fulfill your major electives. There are special circumstances in which additional courses not listed under your DARS can also count towards your major. If you believe another course could count for your major, you can contact your departmental counselors.

How do I make a 4-year plan?

You can make a 4-year plan with the help of an academic counselor. You can also make it yourself by accessing your DARS and becoming informed of the classes you need for your major/minor. Once you do this, you can use the template provided at the end of this page to start creating your 4-year plan.
